The Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors running Ipswich Borough Council have taken their first step towards dismantling Labour's promise of a Cleaner Ipswich.
Independent surveys by ENCAMS (formerly the Tidy Britain Group) have shown that Ipswich became steadily cleaner under Labour's Cleaner Ipswich initiative. That progress now looks set to go into sharp reverse because the Council's Executive voted not to employ any staff to enforce new on-the-spot fines for littering.
The money to pay for the two posts had already been agreed by the Council when it was controlled by Labour and the jobs advertised in the local press.
Litter used to be one of the biggest concerns from residents, but I haven't had a letter about litter for 18 months. I can see with my own eyes that "Cleaner Ipswich" has made a difference.
More Tory cuts.
