Three fringe meetings tonight. First up is the Deputy Leaders reception. Most of the candidates are there and I get my photo taken with John Prescott, who has huge bags under his eyes! Couple of short speeches about the North East regional election and that's it. Drinks only reception so I head off in search of food!
The Observer have a fringe meeting, entitled "Andrew Rawnsley in conversation with Lord Falconer". Rawnsley is ill so Will Hutton steps in. It's a bit dry talking about constitutional reform but it has a good buffet!
And finally, "Do we get the politics we deserve" hosted by Jon Snow of Channel 4. There is a panel with John Reid, Lord Falconer (again) and Gaby Hinsliff (Observer political journalist, sitting in for another sick journalist). Gaby speaks very well, telling us what life is like for a journalist and how the spin doctors lie. She says we need to move to a more American system where the government is more open but journalists have dual sources for verifying sources before they run stories. She is also horrified by the anti-immigration stories run by some newspapers. The Express and Mail were mentioned. John Reid says politicians should retire at 65 - Gaby writes this up as a story
Gaby is an intelligent and attractive - I'm sure she'll go on to greater things.
