After weeks of uncertainty, the Ipswich concessionary bus fare scheme for pensioners has been saved. Several hundred North Ipswich residents responded to my campaign to retain the 40 pence fare for pensioners.
The papers presented to the meeting of Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive, on 21st December made it clear that an increase of 50% in pensioners’ bus fares was still under active consideration. However, the Tories and Liberal Democrats knew there would have been a massive outcry if they had hiked fares. I have no doubt that it was the sustained opposition from local people that made Ipswich Borough Council think again.
